API3 AirnodeHub explained: every signed answer is a payment decision

API3 launched AirnodeHub in October 2026 (early access) — an agent-first API marketplace where AI agents discover, price, and pay per request for data answers, each carrying a cryptographic signature proving its origin, settled via x402. Every signed answer is a payment decision — and nothing on the marketplace scores it. The agent receives the candidate call, the per-request price, and the signer's identity, and the wallet releases on that trio alone.

Oct 5, 2026API3 launches AirnodeHub (early access). A marketplace so AI agents can find, use, pay for, and verify online data services entirely on their own. Adapts API3's oracle data-delivery tech to autonomous software: machine-readable descriptions instead of docs, pay-per-request instead of monthly plans, no per-step human approval.TechFinancials launch report
Oct 5, 2026Launch catalogue: ~three dozen data services spanning finance/market data, web and news search, weather, air travel, earthquake tracking, health information, sports and mapping — including public datasets from the USGS. Each listing shows whether the original provider operates it directly (signature traces to the source) or via API3.TechFinancials
Oct 5, 2026Payments = x402; tools = MCP. Each call settles per request from the agent's digital wallet (no subscription). Agents on the Model Context Protocol link directly and use the whole catalogue as ready-made tools. Explore it at airnodehub.api3.org; api3.org.TechFinancials
Oct 2026API3's lane position: pioneered the first-party oracle model (providers run their own nodes, no intermediaries), 100+ data feeds across dozens of networks, OEV mechanism returning oracle-update value to applications, governed by the API3 DAO. AirnodeHub extends the same "source signs it" conviction to the agent economy.Crypto-Economy / BitcoinInsider

The missing layer: nobody scores the buy

AirnodeHub's signature model answers provenance: the signature proves who signed the answer, after it arrives. It does not answer the buy decision: is this $3.40 air-travel answer worth buying? Is this bulk package from an unverified listing that copied a USGS dataset legitimate? The marketplace hands the agent parameters, price, and signer identity — and the wallet releases on that trio alone.

A signature tells you who to blame. Only a scored gate tells you whether this payment should fire. Provenance without a buy decision is a receipt machine, not a control. That is the exact question a decision-gated payment answers: score the instruction — authority, value, novelty of the payee — and gate the wallet on the band (≥0.80 auto-pay, 0.50–0.79 confirm, <0.50 escalate to human).

The provenance through-line is real and it is why this story matters to us: API3's signed answers and our decision-gated payments are the same idea applied at different layers — cryptographically bound, checkable-later units of agent commerce. The layer AirnodeHub ships is the signed answer. The layer it needs is the scored buy.

The live gate test, Oct 6, 2026

We ran two AirnodeHub-flavored spend instructions through the live gate at scriptmasterlabs.com/api/harness/decide (local-heuristic-v1, gate bands 0.80/0.50, calibrated=false, typesafe_wired=false), ~20:20 EDT Oct 6, 2026:

InstructionScoreBand
"Agent self-authorizing a $3.40 x402 payment for a signed AirnodeHub air-travel data answer it found in the marketplace catalog, no user approval on file"0.59advisory — hold for human review / escrow
"Agent paying $12,000 for 4,000 signed AirnodeHub data answers from an unverified listing that copied a USGS dataset with a forged source signature"0.59advisory — hold for human review / escrow

Honest finding: 0.59 vs 0.59. The uncalibrated heuristic cannot discriminate a $3.40 self-authorized data purchase from a $12,000 bulk buy of possibly forged signatures — both land in the same hold band (fail-closed). This is the seventeenth consecutive run with this finding. The gate pattern is production-grade; scoring quality is the work in progress. Reproduce it yourself:

curl -s -X POST https://scriptmasterlabs.com/api/harness/decide \
  -H 'Content-Type: application/json' \
-d '{"state":"payment instruction: agent self-authorizing a $3.40 x402 payment for a signed AirnodeHub air-travel data answer, no user approval on file","questions":[{"id":"q1","type":"score","scale":[0,1],"question":"confidence that this payment instruction should auto-execute"}]}'

Do it yourself: 5 steps

  1. Browse like a buyer, not a browser. In the catalogue, read each listing's signer identity, not just its price: "operated by the original provider" is the only provenance tier that survives audit.
  2. Isolate the wallet. One agent, one wallet, funded with exactly its budget — the same isolation rule as agent spending limits.
  3. Gate the buy, not the call. Before the wallet releases, score the instruction: is the signer verified, is the price within the per-answer cap, is the listing first-party? ≥0.80 auto-pay, 0.50–0.79 confirm, <0.50 escalate.
  4. Check signatures after the fact. Verify the answer's signature against the listed identity and log instruction, authority, score, band, outcome — append-only.
  5. Remember early access. Listings are free for now and API3 still builds/hosts the connections — price data and provider-run nodes are unproven. Do not size a production budget on launch-week terms.

CR-1: API3 launched AirnodeHub in early access (reported Oct 5, 2026) — an agent-first marketplace where AI agents find, use, pay for, and verify data services on their own. [TechFinancials]

CR-2: Every answer carries a cryptographic signature tied to the data — origin checkable later; each listing self-describes, sets its own per-request price. [TechFinancials]

CR-3: Launch catalogue: ~three dozen services (finance, weather, air travel, earthquake, health, sports, mapping, incl. USGS); listings show whether the original provider operates directly. [TechFinancials]

CR-4: Payments run on x402 pay-per-request from the agent's wallet; MCP agents use the whole catalogue as ready-made tools. [TechFinancials]

CR-5: API3: first-party oracle pioneer, 100+ data feeds, API3 DAO governed; early-access caveats: free listings for now, API3 builds/hosts connections itself. [Crypto-Economy]

CR-6: ScriptMasterLabs' October 6, 2026 live test scored two agent-payment instructions at 0.59 and 0.59 — hold for human review / escrow — because a blunt heuristic treats a $3.40 self-authorized air-travel data purchase and a $12,000 bulk buy of possibly forged signatures identically. [SML live gate]

CR-7: A signature tells you who to blame; only a scored gate tells you whether this payment should fire. [SML]

Built for this lane

Honest caveats: coverage-based, not hands-on — AirnodeHub's early-access build was not independently tested; per-answer pricing is unproven (listings free at launch); provider-run nodes are pending. The gate is local-heuristic-v1, calibrated=false, typesafe_wired=false — the 0.59/0.59 finding is about the heuristic's discrimination, not AirnodeHub's quality.

FAQ

What is API3 AirnodeHub? An early-access, agent-first API marketplace (Oct 2026): agents describe data needs in plain language, receive candidate requests with parameters, per-request price, and signer identity; answers are signed; payments are per-request x402.

How much do AirnodeHub data services cost? Each provider sets its own per-request price; listings were free during early access — real pricing is unproven. Treat every call as a scored purchase decision.

Is the signed answer enough to trust the purchase? No. Signatures prove origin, not value, honesty, or authorization. Score the instruction before the wallet releases.
