How Do AI Agents Pay for APIs?
An AI agent can pay for an API programmatically when the service publishes machine-readable payment terms and the agent has a wallet or payment capability governed by a spend policy. With x402, the request itself becomes the place where pricing, authorization and settlement are coordinated.

The machine payment flow
The client calls an API, tool or resource it wants to use.
The response describes accepted payment requirements in a machine-readable form.
The client can compare price, network, asset and resource identity against a configured spend policy before authorizing anything.
For the canonical SqueezeOS rail, the payment asset is USDC on Base mainnet and Coinbase CDP is the facilitator.
The original request is retried with the protocol-defined payment data.
Supported SCRIPTMASTERLABS guarded resources separate authorization from earned settlement: verify → execute → validate acceptance → settle → release.
A successful 402 challenge alone is not payment proof. Settlement evidence is the stronger authority.
Why this matters for autonomous agents
- No human checkout required: payment can happen inside a software workflow.
- Pay per use: services can price individual calls instead of forcing a subscription.
- Machine-readable terms: the agent can reason over price, asset, network and resource identity.
- MCP monetization: payment-aware services can charge for selected Model Context Protocol tools or resources.
- Autonomous procurement: agents can discover, compare and purchase capabilities as part of a larger task.
- Service chaining: one paid result can feed the next tool or API in an agent workflow.
